On May 10th, La Victoriana celebrated its 17th anniversary!
To those of us children, 17 years is practically a generation. And so I realized many people who ‘know’ what La Victoriana is about and who we are have grown and gone. And for many of you our shop is ‘new’.

Welcome, new customers and new visitors to our website!

WHAT’S NEW

Our website! Welcome! This new site is still very much a work in progress. Thank you for your patience while we continue to work on the price list, product photos, and translations to Spanish. We have expanded the site to include various articles on midwifery and parenting by Alison Bastien, most of which have been previously published in print magazines and at this time are only in English. Please visit the new section on our Historical Apothecary Exhibit at the Museo Allende as well.

Today’s featured plant is lavender (Lavandula Spp., L. Angustifolia, L. Spica) of the labiates family. Its main constituents include volatile oils, tannins, cumarines, flavenoids and triterpenoids. Its action is characterized as relaxant, antispasmodic, circulatory stimulant, nervous system tonic, anti-bacterial, analgesic, antiseptic, and carminative. Lavender’s generally accepted uses include for depression, headache, nervous exhaustion, tension, colic, eczema, burns, muscle aches, insect bites, head lice, and leucorrhoea.

In most Western cultures, it is considered responsible parenting to bring the baby to “Well Baby Check-Ups” at six weeks and then monthly for at least the first year of life. This establishes a continuity relationship with the pediatrician and ideally, an opportunity for comfort and eduction of the new parents.

Spring is a good time to initiate a cleanse, as our bodies shift metabolically from hibernation to activity, and as the pollens and dust come out to play.

Besides the skin, which we consider a peripheral organ, the 3 vital organs involved in detoxification are: the liver, the kidneys and the bowels.
